From the Morning Chronicle. September 30.
To the People of Great Britain.
My dear Countrymen,
Can there be many in this island, so besotted, so lost to
all common sense, as to believe on the word of a talkative
man, that America should be independent, not only of the
Parliament, but of the Crown of Britain, to which it has
been from its first existence and settlement, and ought to
be, at least to the Crown, for its own interest, as well as
our's, always subject . . . .[66 lines]
Alas! alas! how is our empire gone!
By the strong arms, and blood of heroes won!
Alas! how soon by sudden causes lost
